Do Bat Repellents Actually Work? Ultrasonic Devices, Mothballs and More

Bat repellents do not work on an established colony. Ultrasonic devices, mothballs, bright lights, peppermint sprays and plastic owls have no credible evidence behind them — and some are actively harmful. Bats return to the same roost year after year and will not abandon it over a smell or sound. The only method that works, and is legal for Ontario’s protected bats, is professional one-way-door exclusion.
That is the short answer. The longer answer is worth reading, because the repellent aisle is full of products that cost real money, waste an entire season, and in some cases make the problem worse. Let’s go through each one honestly, explain why bats ignore them, and then look at what actually empties an attic for good.
Do ultrasonic bat repellent devices work?
Ultrasonic and electronic “bat repellers” are the best-selling option, and they are also the most thoroughly debunked.
The pitch sounds plausible: bats have sensitive hearing, so a device that blasts high-frequency sound should drive them away. But think about what a bat actually is. Bats navigate by echolocation — they produce and listen to intense ultrasonic sound all day, every day, often while packed into a roost with hundreds of other bats doing the same thing. A bat colony is already one of the loudest ultrasonic environments in nature. A small plug-in speaker adds almost nothing to that soundscape, and bats quickly learn it is harmless background noise.
Independent testing on ultrasonic repellent devices has consistently failed to show they evict established animals, and regulators have taken notice. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission has pursued makers of ultrasonic animal-repeller devices over unsupported effectiveness claims — a strong signal about how well these products hold up when someone demands evidence. No wildlife agency in Canada recommends them for bat eviction.
Verdict: an established colony will roost directly beside an ultrasonic device. Save your money.
Will mothballs (naphthalene) drive bats out?
Mothballs are the classic old-house remedy, and they fail for a simple chemical reason: the dose that might bother a bat is a dose that harms the people living underneath.
At quantities that are safe for your household, naphthalene vapour in a ventilated attic dissipates quickly and bats simply shuffle a little farther from the smell. To reach a concentration bats truly cannot tolerate, you would need so much naphthalene that the fumes become a genuine health concern for occupants — headaches, nausea and worse — soaking into insulation and drifting into living space below. Using mothballs to repel bats is also not an approved use of the product; they are registered for moths in sealed containers, not open attics.
Verdict: ineffective at safe levels, unsafe at effective levels, and off-label either way. Skip it.
What about bright lights and fans?
Lights and fans at least rest on real biology — bats prefer dark, warm, still roost spaces. The trouble is what bats do when you make the attic less comfortable: they usually do not leave the building. They move deeper into it.
Flood an attic with light and run a fan, and the colony often shifts from the open attic into wall voids, soffit cavities, or gaps behind the chimney — places that are darker, warmer, harder to inspect and much harder to exclude from. You have not solved the problem; you have relocated it somewhere worse, often closer to your living space.
During maternity season the risk is more serious. From roughly May to early August, Ontario attics hold flightless pups that cannot follow their mothers. Harassment that pushes adults to shift position can separate mothers from pups or strand pups in spots where they cannot be reached or fed. Verdict: at best a minor nuisance to the bats, at worst a way to push the colony into your walls and endanger pups.
Do peppermint oil and other sprays repel bats?
Essential-oil sprays — peppermint, eucalyptus, cinnamon — are the newest entry on the shelf, and the story is short. A strong smell may cause a few minutes of wing-shuffling when it is fresh. Then the volatile oils evaporate, the scent fades, and the bats are exactly where they were. In a ventilated attic, “fresh” lasts hours, not weeks. No spray creates a lasting barrier, and no spray reaches the deep crevices where bats actually tuck themselves during the day.
Verdict: a pleasant-smelling attic with the same bats in it.
Do plastic owls and predator decoys scare bats away?
Bats do avoid owls in the wild — real ones, that move and hunt. A motionless plastic owl bolted to a gable is identified as harmless scenery within days. Wildlife biologists call this habituation, and it is why you see pigeons perched on plastic owls in every city. Bats inside an attic may never even see the decoy, since they exit at dusk in low light through gaps the owl is not watching.
Verdict: garden ornament, not bat control.
The one DIY move that actually causes harm: sealing bats inside
Every repellent above is merely useless. This one is destructive.
Homeowners sometimes find the entry hole — often a gap at the roofline or a loose piece of flashing — and seal it on a day the bats seem quiet. But the colony is almost always inside when this happens. Sealed in, bats either die inside the structure, creating a severe odour and contamination problem in your insulation, or they push downward through wall cavities searching for another exit and end up flying around your living room. Both outcomes mean more cost, more cleanup and more human–bat contact than the original problem.
There is a legal layer too. Several of Ontario’s eight bat species — including the little brown bat — are listed as endangered, and harming them is against the law. Why repellents fail: bats are loyal to their roost
The pattern in that table is not a coincidence. Every repellent fails for the same underlying reason: bats are strongly roost-faithful.
A female little brown bat does not choose your attic casually. A maternity roost has to be warm, dry, dark, safe from predators and stable for the months it takes to raise a single pup per year — and structures that tick every box are genuinely rare on the landscape. Once a colony proves an attic works, females return to it year after year, often across generations; many are returning to the roost where they themselves were born. With lifespans that can exceed 30 years, one attic can serve the same family line for decades.
From the bat’s point of view, your attic is not a convenience — it is an irreplaceable maternity investment. A weird noise, an unpleasant smell or a plastic owl is a minor annoyance measured against losing the only proven nursery they know. They will tolerate all of it. That is why “make the attic unpleasant” strategies lose, and why the winning strategy is completely different: don’t try to change the bats’ minds — remove their access.
